Tour 2 “Tashkent as the Capital of Islamic Culture”

The purpose of this tour is to acquaint the participants with the Islamic culture and spirit of the city of Tashkent and its Zangi-ata suburbs. Participants will be acquainted with the monuments built in honor of the renowned spiritual leaders of Central Asia.

Mausoleum of Sheikh Hovendi Tahur was built in XIV-XV cc. It was wholly completed at the end of XIV and the beginning of XV century. The mausoleum was rebuilt in the 1990's according to the original architectural plan.

Kukeldash Madrasah (XVI c.) was built on a hill by the Vizier of the Tashkent ruler (1551-1575) Kukeldash. The madrasah is of traditional composition. At the end of the XVIII century this madrasah was used as a caravanserai. Today it functions primarily as an educational institution.

Mausoleum of Sheikh Zaynutdin Bobo (XVI c.) is situated in Kukcha part of the ancient city of Tashkent. After the death of  Sheikh Zaynutdin Bobo his followers built a small Chortak (quadrant with four minarets) on the site of his grave. Later this Chortak was  rebuilt by Amir Temur and thereafter reconstructed several times. The most ancient element of the mausoleum is Chillya-khona.

The Zangi-ata complex (XIV-XIX cc.) is situated in the village of Zangi-ata - 15 kilometers south of Tashkent. This is the burial place of Sheikh Ay-Khodja (nicknamed “Zangi-ata” meaning “black”) who lived at the end of the XII century. Construction of the complex was begun by Amir Temur. The Zangi-ata complex is still functioning and is held in high respect and esteem amongst Muslims.
