Tour 2 “Tashkent as the Capital of Islamic Culture”
The purpose of this tour is to acquaint
the participants with the Islamic culture and spirit of the city of Tashkent and its Zangi-ata
suburbs. Participants will be acquainted with the monuments built in honor of
the renowned spiritual leaders of Central Asia.

Mausoleum of Sheikh Hovendi Tahur was built in XIV-XV cc. It was
wholly completed at the end of XIV and the beginning of XV century. The
mausoleum was rebuilt in the 1990's according to the original architectural
plan.

Kukeldash
Madrasah (XVI c.)
was built on a hill by the Vizier of the Tashkent ruler (1551-1575) Kukeldash. The
madrasah is of traditional composition. At the end of the XVIII century this
madrasah was used as a caravanserai. Today it functions primarily as an educational institution.

Mausoleum of Sheikh Zaynutdin Bobo (XVI c.) is situated in Kukcha part of the
ancient city of Tashkent.
After the death of Sheikh Zaynutdin
Bobo his followers built a small Chortak (quadrant with four minarets) on the
site of his grave. Later this Chortak was
rebuilt by Amir Temur and thereafter reconstructed several times. The
most ancient element of the mausoleum is Chillya-khona.

The Zangi-ata complex (XIV-XIX cc.) is situated in the
village of Zangi-ata - 15
kilometers south of Tashkent. This is the burial place of
Sheikh Ay-Khodja (nicknamed “Zangi-ata” meaning “black”) who lived at the end
of the XII century. Construction of the complex was begun by Amir Temur. The
Zangi-ata complex is still functioning and is held in high respect and esteem
amongst Muslims.
